A Quick Guide to Urban Hiking

America’s Walking Club members are all about walking in different places, whether that’s more in nature, or more of a city-setting, and sometimes a mix of both. The words “urban” and “hiking” may not be something you typically see, but it is something us AVA members do quite a lot. Our members love to explore new cities, so we switch those rugged paths and mountains for inner-city parks, walkways, secret passages and stairways and still get the same level of activity. Here’s a little guide to help you get started on your urban hiking journey.

What is Urban Hiking?

Essentially, urban hiking is when you are trekking in built-up, urban areas. Urban hiking allows you to take advantage of the city around you at (mainly) anytime. Whether you are at home or in a city for a conference or for vacation, you can take a nice urban hike without going too far out of the wayUrban hiking allows you to see the sights of the city, while getting your exercise in.

Planning for an Urban Hike

Just like a nature hike, you still want to make sure you plan for an urban hike so you are prepared.

  •  Plan your route ahead of time: Unlike  most nature walks, you will want to amke sure the path you are taking for your urban hike  doesn’t have any road or sidewalk closures that can derail your pathway.
  • Gear up for the concrete: swap your heavy hiking boots for highly cushioned running/walking shoesto protect joints on concrete. Consider wearing hiking socks to grab moisture, because much like your nature walks, you still want something that is sweat absorbing. Pack light with only essentials like a light rain jacket, sunglasses, and a portable phone charger for maps and photos.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Whether you are going on a nature hike or an urban hike, you want to be aware of your surroundings, but you should gibe a little extra attention in the city. Pay attention to signs, obey traffic laws, and watch out for bycyclists and moto vehicles.
  • Maximize your walk with other experiences: One of the reasons we may choose to go on a more urban walk is because we want to explore the city more. While planning your route, make sure to include stops at the local museums for a AC break, the local restaurants for a bite to eat, and whatever else you may want to see.

Find an Urban Hike Near You

There are different ways you can find an urban walking path in your area. You can plot out a route yourself using your phone’s satnav, Google Maps, or Plotaroute. You can also look to see if there is an urban hike to the city you’re going to on the America’s Walking Club website. We have a plethora of walks and hikes for everyone to enjoy by themselves, or maybe you can catch an event or a group walk while in the city. We'll see you there!
